Kids are most excited with the upcoming event of “Father’s day” and as always, it is the daunting task of every mother to find that special gift. Shopping for a man is never easy and picking out a perfect gift can become quite tiresome. But buying a gift is not always a best solution – sometimes, the most appreciated gifts are the ones created by the kids themselves. For this very special occasion, let your child gift their dad a handmade token of love.
This beautiful desk-stand comprises of most materials that are found around the house.
Keeping in mind that this is a child’s handiwork, I have adapted this craftwork using the basic techniques of papier maché – making it an uncomplicated craft for children of all ages.
I have used materials from my collection of “re-usable items”, but you can substitute any of the items with whatever you have at hand.
You will need:
• A cardboard tube
• Small rectangular receptacle ( I used a mini yogurt casing)
• CD (an old or unreadable CD will do just fine)
• Kitchen or toilet roll
• White glue
• Acrylic paints – Black, red, gold.
• Paint brushes
• A CD sized circle cut out cardboard
Tear up the tissue into bits and keep them aside. Now, in a small bowl, mix equal portions of white glue and water – the result should not be too thick but easy to spread with a paint brush. Placing the tissue on top of the cardboard tube, layer a light coat of the glue mixture. Cover the entire surface and set aside to dry. Once it’s dry, repeat this process with two layers of tissues.
The first three items on the list have to be covered with coats of tissue paper in this manner. For this project, I have used kitchen roll. Alternatively, this can be substituted with toilet paper or paper serviettes.
Now, with a bit of glue (not the mixture) attach the three items together. To fuse them completely, take small bits of paper and cover the joints. Place bits of paper partially on both the objects and apply the glue mixture. After all the joints are covered, set this aside to dry. The tissue will harden, making the entire stand a very firm unit.
For the finishing, paint the base of the stand with the gold paint. The pen holder can by uniquely designed for Dad, either with the “suit & tie” pattern I used or with something special that he is fond of – like music or sports. You can also write a slogan on the base of the stand like “world’s best dad” “my greatest hero” or anything best suited. To give the stand a completed finish, fix the cut out cardboard under the base of the CD.
There is nothing more precious than the love of a child, and handmade gifts help to re-instate that love.
